The Ikat technique combines dyeing and weaving. Originating in Indonesia and refined in India, this technique involves dyeing the threads using the tie&dye technique, one color at a time. The pattern emerges after the weave is manually woven on the loom. In the case of double ikat, both the weft and warp threads are dyed, and the more colors incorporated into the pattern, the more complex and laborious the process becomes. Traditionally, this knowledge is passed down from father to son, in families dedicated to weaving for several generations.
